Paraguay Hecho a Mano USA, Inc. volunteers visit Iguassu Falls, Brazil with Alverno College students --Tomisha (left) Maggie Hegemann (center), Carol Vollmer Pope (right)

  • “While visiting Paraguay in May 2002, with a management class through Alverno College, I encountered a fantastic South American culture full of friendly people, delicious cuisine, and beautiful artwork. We were able to meet with Paraguayan college students, experience their college classroom, and visit a South American bank in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. We had a short stay in a rural setting at Mamorei retreat center and visited with local artisans. I was able to spend a day at a local business in Asuncion that specialized in Aroma therapy products. It was a once in a lifetime experience. I will never forget the kind and gracious Paraguayans that took our class under the wings and were ambassadors of Paraguay during our stay. Carol Vollmer Pope created an exciting and invaluable trip for our class. I’m so glad she continues to share her love of Paraguay with others through Paraguay Hecho a Mano. Her efforts are vital for sustaining the lovely Paraguayan culture.” — Maggie Hegeman, Milwaukee, WI

Becky Burton, (left) Alverno College Milwaukee, WI Biology Professor, volunteers with 21 de Julio pottery artisan Teodosia Esquivel in 21 de Julio Paraguay

“I attended the Alverno Latin America Studies Initiative trip in 2004.  Our visit
to a local artisan near Tobati was unforgettable.  We could see that the area
where she lived was very impoverished and that her own means were very limited.
However, she had a great deal of pride in her skills and graciously shared them
with us.  When I tried to mix and shape the clay, I had a new understanding of
the strength and technique required in her art.  Our visit to a local school
showed us dedicated teachers and enthusiastic students who had benefitted from
the contributions of Hecho a Mano, but still had many needs. Paraguay Hecho a
Mano has found a way to help communities by empowering local people to get fair
compensation for their artwork.  I was impressed with what they have achieved.” – Rebecca Burton, Milwaukee, WI.

Volunteers planting citrus trees Defensores del Chaco School 21 de Julio Paraguay

High school seniors from the Pan American International School in Luque, Paraguay spent their senior year community service project in service to Paraguay Hecho a Mano.  Each team of three or four students chose one of the United Nations Millennium Goals as a focus and designed a project in conjunction with the Defensores del Chaco elementary school located in the pottery artisan community of 21 de Julio near Tobati Paraguay.  The school desparately needed fruit trees to provide shade for the children to play under, as well as providing fruit to feed the children during their lunch time.  One team planted more than 30 citrus trees with the help of the sixth grade class!
